Oil refineries, Fertilizer plants, Petrochemical plants, Power plants and Cement plants need to monitor the condition of their equipment to
detect the progression of material degradation both in static pressure equipment and certain components of rotating or reciprocation
machineries NDT Services provide services for monitoring material degradation by employing appropriate techniques implemented by well
trained technicians. The range of activities carried out is as under.
1.) Ultrasonic Thickness measurement using digital thickness gauges to monitor reduction in thickness due to corrosion & erosion.
2.) Magnetic Particle Inspection of welds in high pressure piping & vessels. The objective of testing is to detect cracks in the welding, heat
affected zone and adjacent parent material.
3.) Liquid Penetrant Inspection: Equipments & piping constructed from non ferrous or austenitic stainless steels are examined for
presence of cracks using this method, since these materials cannot be magnetized.
4.) Magnetic Particle Inspection is also very useful in examining components of Heavy equipment in cement plants. Drive shafts, Gears,
kiln tyres & rolls etc., which are prone to fatigue cracks in certain critical areas are effectively examined using M.P.I.
Both M.P.I. & L.P.I. techniques can be made very sensitive by utilizing fluorescent testing materials and inspecting the material under ultra
violet lamp. This enables detection of very fine & tight cracks which may lead to failure of the equipment if not detected.
5.) In-Situ Hardness Testing: NDT Services use microprocessor based Portable Hardness Testers for checking the hardness of the
components at the required locations in-situ. Hardness testing provides early indications of objectionable deterioration in the material
properties.
6.) Ultrasonic Flaw Detection: Many weld joints which have been in service for some years under severe operating conditions (Pressure,
temperature, cyclic loading etc.). Start cracking from the inside surface of the piping or vessels. This is specially so in case of single side
welded, full penetration welds. For pipe lines operating under combinations of high pressure & temperature, the material failure due to the
phenomena of creep start from inner surface & proceeds to the pipe OD giving way to direct leak path or sudden failure. Ultrasonic Flaw
Detection detects initiation & progression of such cracks during plant turn around and plant management is enabled to take appropriate
decision regarding repairs - replacement and avoid in - service failure.
7.) Radiographic Examination: Apart from conventional applications, NDT Services have used radiographic examination to obtain useful
information about the condition of the equipment in many non conventional ways. For example, presence of creep cracks in reformer tubes
in a fertilizer plant was detected using radiography, when conventional ultrasonic flaw detection was not effective due to the highly
attenuating and scattering properties of the reformer tube material.
8.) Ultrasonic Flaw Detection & Thickness Measurement on equipments operating at high temperatures: NDT Services have probes,
instruments, couplants & testing procedures to carry out ultrasonic thickness measurement on jobs at temperatures upto 450° C. Flaw
detections can be carried out on jobs having temperature upto 150° C. This service is very useful when some inspection is required while
the plant is in operation.
